    1. KLOTZ, JOHANN CARL, Mittenwald, b. 1709, still living in 1790.
    2. KLOTZ, JOSEPH I (THOMAS), Mittenwald, b. 1743, d. after 1809.
    3. KLOTZ, MATHIAS I, Mittenwald, b. 1656, d. 1743. The real founder of the violin industry in Mittenwald. He was the eldest son of Urban Klotz and received his first lessons from Stainer, although his real education was accomplished in Italy where he worked for six years under Giovanni Railich in Padua. His work is of the highest grade and very praiseworthy. The tone is wonderful although he did not always use the best wood. There are a good many violins of his make in existence. In 1890 a bronze statue was erected to his memory in Mittenwald. A reproduction of the label used by Klotz will be found on Plate 17.
    4. KLOTZ, SEBASTIAN I, Mittenwald, b. 1696, d. after 1767. A son of Mathias Klotz. Violins of his make with a later date than 1750 are not in existence. His instruments are built after the Stainer model. The varnish is thicker and better than that of his father and of different colors, mostly red or dark brown, resembling that of Albanus. His violins bring a high price in both Great Britain and the United States. The label used by Klotz is reproduced on Plate 17, and one of his instruments on Plate 19.
