- ROSS, DONALD, Edinburgh: 1817 till about 1905. He made about fifty violins on the Maggini model.
- ROSS, JOHN, London: c. 1560–1600. A maker of lutes and viols.
- ROWLEY, A. G., Cardiff: contemporary. He is not actually a maker, but he has varnished many instruments for other makers with a very beautiful varnish of his own make. He has studied the varnish problem for many years, and though he may not have solved the "riddle of Cremona," he has certainly succeeded in producing a varnish of wonderful lustre and transparency.

Named in 2 books printed between 1920 and 1925. Read by software from scans of those pages, not yet checked by a person against the page. Entries from 2 books stand under this name, and the software judged them likely the same person. Tell us if that is wrong and we will split the record.
Details and sources
Record note
This record exists because one or more sources name this maker. Printed in: An encyclopedia of the violin (1925); An Encyclopedia of the Violin (1926); British Violin Makers (1920); British Violin Makers: A Biographical Dictionary of British Makers of Stringed Instruments and Bows and a Critical Description of Their Work (1920). Nothing else on this site confirms this record beyond what those sources state — no claim is invented here. Entries from 2 books stand under this name, and the software judged them likely the same person. Tell us if that is wrong and we will split the record. Not established is the honest state of this record; if you can change that, we want to hear from you.

How the pages were read
4 of the 4 lines here were read from machine text (software that turns a photo of a page into words), not by a person looking at the page image. 2 of them rest on a section heading above a list of names, not on a trade word printed on their own line: “VIOLIN MAKERS IN EUROPE”, “VIOLIN MAKERS.”.

The books behind this record
This record draws on 2 sources, both read from machine text. The count weighs how well each source was read, not just how many are cited. A stack of half-read sources does not outweigh one page read properly.
