    2. Bruder von Carl Aug. W., als Geigenmacher ein Mann von ehrlichem Können. Er begründete seine Werkstatt 1881.

    5. Er stammte aus Wien und heirathete am 23. Oct. 1701 die Wittwe des Augsburger Lautenmachers Jakob Fichtl. Ob er in Wien gelernt oder gearbeitet hat, lässt sich nicht feststellen; dass er aber in Salzburg gelebt habe, wie so oft behauptet wird, erscheint ganz ausgeschlossen, da noch nie eine Arbeit von ihm, die von dort aus datirt wäre, zum Vorschein kam. Er gehört zu den besten Augsburger Meistern; sein Modell erinnert an Stainer und Albani, ist aber originell in den Umrissen und den Einzelheiten. Die Halbkreislinien sind beim Hals und beim Klotz gerade abgeplattet, die Einlagen sind 3 1/2 mm vom Rand abstehend, die Hohlkehle ist tief und die Wölbung ziemlich hoch, das Holz ist gut gewählt, der Boden meist nach der Schwarte geschnitten, der Lack wechselt ab von hellrother bis dunkelbrauner Farbe. Die Schnecke ist klein und hat einen gestreckten Wirbelkasten, doch finden sich hier häufig Engels- oder Thierköpfschen (Löwen, Bären etc.). Die Maasse theilt Piegendorfer mit. Im Ton sind seine Violen und Violoncelli am besten. Arbeiten von ihm besitzen u. A. das Nationalmuseum in München, das Germanische Museum in Nürnberg (Violine von 1754), Berlin aus der Sammlung Snoeck (Zither von 1750), Paul de Wit' etc.*). Er machte auch viele Lauten und Theorben.
