    1. BRETON, FRANÇOIS, Mirecourt, b. about 1750, d. 1830. Breton's work was not as artistic as it was clean-cut. He preferred a large model and always used a light yellow varnish. He employed many workmen, and his instruments are not rare, but, as his business was taken over by a Mirecourt house, it is well to distinguish between the older and the newer instruments, as this firm places the old Breton label in new violins.
