    5. Sohn des Giuseppe C. und der letzte Geigenmacher der Familie. Wenn er auch so wenig wie irgendein anderer Geigenmacher des 19. Jahrhunderts die großen Cremoneser Meister erreichte, so hat er doch Anerkennenswertes geleistet; namentlich seine Violoncelli gelten als wertvolle Arbeiten. Er hat an 400 Geigen gebaut und beschickte alle größeren Ausstellungen, die ihn mit Medaillen auszeichneten. Seine letzte Arbeit war 1881 in Mailand ausgestellt. Er wohnte Via Borgo Spera Nr. 14.

    5. CERUTTI, GIOV. BATTISTA, Cremona, b. about 1755, d. after 1817. A pupil of Lorenzo Storiomi, and later his successor. On account of ill health the business was afterwards transferred to his son. He worked on the Guanerius model, and made in all about five hundred violins. The varnish varies in color, sometimes light yellow, then again deep red. At times he used different woods for back and belly. The tone of his violin is loud and clear, and has quite naturally gained by age.
