    1. GUARNERIUS, PIETRO I GIOVANNI, Cremona, Mantua, b. Cremona, 1655, d. after 1728. First son of Andreas Guarnerius. Came to Mantua in 1680 and returned to Cremona in 1698. He was a pupil of the Amati, but his father was his principal teacher. He was a gifted violin maker. In form his violins differ greatly from those of his father and brothers. He made several attempts to create some new models, but failed in every instance. Generally speaking, his model is a composite of Amati and Stradivarius, and the tone often lacks volume. The wood is of good quality and the varnish is light red or brownish yellow.

    1. GUARNERIUS (Pietro I) — Cremona and Mantua 1655-1728.
    2. Born in Cremona. Eldest son and pupil of Andrea. When he was 25, he left his father's workshops to establish himself at Mantua. He is supposed to have worked at Venice where, presumably, he died in the year 1728. His instruments, generally a little arched and adorned with a thick red or transparent brown-yellow varnish, are excellent in quality of tone, but lack in volume, the tables not always having the necessary thickness. The model is fine and large, the sound holes also being large. The scroll, broadly treated, is original. Corners gracefully elongated. Very regular purfling. Guarnerius scroll. No 241.
    3. GUARNERIUS (Pietro II) — Cremona and Venice 1695-1760.
    4. Son of Guiseppe and probably his pupil. Worked at Venice from 1725-1750. Little is known of this maker who produced some very fine instruments. often mistaken for his uncle's work. Choice material and pale red varnish of excellent quality. No 328.
    5. GUARNERIUS (Guiseppe-Antonio) Called del Gesù — Cremona

Record note

Not established: that is this record’s honest state, resting on one thing alone — An encyclopedia of the violin (1925); An encyclopedia of the violin (1925); An Encyclopedia of the Violin (1926); Dictionary of Violin makers (1928), naming this maker and nothing more. Entries from 3 books stand under this name, and the software judged them likely the same person. Tell us if that is wrong and we will split the record. No claim beyond what is printed there has been invented here. If more can be said, write in and tell us.

How the pages were read

5 of the 5 lines here were read from machine text (software that turns a photo of a page into words), not by a person looking at the page image. 1 of them rests on a section heading above a list of names, not on a trade word printed on its own line: “VIOLIN MAKERS IN EUROPE”.

The books behind this record

This record draws on 3 sources, all read from machine text. The count weighs how well each source was read, not just how many are cited. A stack of half-read sources does not outweigh one page read properly.
