    1. KLOTZ, AEGIDIUS I, Mittenwald, 1675 to 1711. There are in existence a large number of old violins under the name of Aegidius Klotz. His work is similar to the work of Aegidius II of the eighteenth century, but his violins are much better and worth about three times as much as those of his namesake. He must have been a pupil of Stainer. One of his violins may be found in a collection at Berlin.

    7. KLOTZ, MATHIAS I, Mittenwald, b. 1656, d. 1743. The real founder of the violin industry in Mittenwald. He was the eldest son of Urban Klotz and received his first lessons from Stainer, although his real education was accomplished in Italy where he worked for six years under Giovanni Railich in Padua. His work is of the highest grade and very praiseworthy. The tone is wonderful although he did not always use the best wood. There are a good many violins of his make in existence. In 1890 a bronze statue was erected to his memory in Mittenwald. A reproduction of the label used by Klotz will be found on Plate 17.
