    2. NICOLAS, DIDIER L'AINE, Mirecourt, b. Mirecourt, 1757, d. 1833. Son and pupil Antoine Nicolas. He made good cheap violins, but they cannot be judged as works of art, although they have all the same good characteristics. His model is flat and suggestive of Stradivarius. With his attempts to change the regular form of the violin, he had, like many others, very little success. His varnish is reddish brown inclining toward yellow. He conducted the manufacture of violins on a large scale, and at times employed as many as six hundred men.
