    1. PFRETSCHNER, CARL GOTTL, b. 1807, d. 1863.
    2. PIERRAY, CLAUDE, Paris, 1698 to 1726. One of the best representatives of the Paris school. His violins are made in small and large patterns, and are generally varnished light red or yellow which time has turned very dark. The tone is brilliant and very powerful. Authorities are agreed that Claude Pierray's violins compare favorably with Cremonese instruments. There are a great many of his violins still to be obtained.

    5. Seine Arbeit ist sehr ungleichwertig: neben sehr mittelmäßigen Violinen findet man manchmal auch solche, die recht gut klingen. Seine Geigen kommen häufig vor, doch sind seine Violoncelli, deren Böden meist aus einem Stück gefertigt sind, in der Regel besser. Sein Lack ist ziemlich dunkel. Er verwendete eine Brandmarke: Pillement à Paris. Auf seinem Zettel bezeichnet er sich als F. Pillement père. Es scheint also auch sein Sohn Geigenmacher gewesen zu sein; vielleicht ist dies jener »Lété Pillement« in Turin, dessen Namen man in einer Gitarre las, oder jener Jean Pillement, der um 1788 als Geigenmacher und Händler in Mirecourt nachweisbar ist. Die staatl. Sammlung in Berlin besitzt aus der Sammlung Snoeck eine Geige von Pillement (Nr. 532), eine andere Karl Stoeber in Würzburg.
