THE Partello COLLECTION
JOSEPH GUARNERIUS DEL JESU, CREMONA, 1742
Number 7826. THE DUKE DE CAMPOSELICE. Before Mr. Partello acquired this grand specimen in 1904, it was at one time the treasure of the Duke de Camposalice, who was an enthusiastic collector of fine instruments. It is of the same period as the Vieuxtemps and Paganini Guarnerius violins. Many choice examples of the genius of this famous master have passed through our hands, but we doubt whether, from a tonal standpoint, there is in existence today one superior to this. Two of the world's most famous artists visiting our violin studios recently, pronounced this violin one of the most beautiful examples of the work of Joseph del Jesu and one of the finest in tone that, as one of them said, "he had ever put a bow upon." The back is formed by two pieces of handsome maple with a broad figure and sides to match; the top is spruce of medium grain. The varnish, with which the violin is well covered, is of a golden yellow. It is in a fine state of preservation and possesses a tone of exquisite quality and marvelous carrying power. (Plate II)
Price: $25,000
ANTONIUS STRADIVARIUS, CREMONA, 1690
Number 7940. THE LORD NELSON. This historic violin was secured by Mr. Partello in the year 1890. It acquired its title because of its presence upon the flagship of the great admiral during the battle of Trafalgar, and from which it was recovered unscathed after the victory. The violin was the property of one of Lord Nelson's officers. It is a Stradivarius of that master's well-known long type of violin. The back is fashioned from one piece of handsome wood of rather broad flame. The sides match the back. The spruce employed in the construction of the top is of exceptional quality. The scroll is very finely cut, and is slightly worn on the right side. The violin is in a good state of preservation. Its tone is surpassingly lovely. (Plate III)
Price: $18,500
This famous violin is now the property of Miss Elizabeth Rothwell, of Beaumont, Texas.
