RARE Old VIOLINS
JOSEPH GUARNERIUS FILIUS ANDREAS, CREMONA, 1710
Number 8007. This violin excels any other by this maker known to us, and its condition is superb. Model is flat. The back is of two pieces of handsomely figured maple with sides to match. The top is of the choicest selection for tone, which is of great beauty and splendid volume. The varnish is a brownish color, artistically shaded. This violin was for several years the property of the young American artist, Winston Wilkinson, who used it while assisting artist to John McCormack. It is a solo violin of the first class. (Plate XVII)
Price: $5,000
Now in the possession of Miss Charlotte Strong, of Beaumont, Texas.
NICOLAS GAGLIANO, NAPLES, 1758
Number 7626. Among the fine Nicolas Gaglianos that have come under our observation, this clearly is the choicest of all. It is of the broad Stradivarius type. The back is of two pieces of very handsome maple with sides to match; top of medium grain spruce of the choicest quality for a large tone. The varnish is an orange red shade of great beauty. The condition is remarkably fine. A solo violin for an artist.
Price: $4,500
ANDREAS GUARNERIUS, CREMONA, 1685
Number 7303. This Cremona masterpiece, created almost two and one-half centuries ago, is notable for its remarkably fine condition. The master exercised the greatest care in his choice of woods for this glorious violin. The top is one of special excellence, yielding tone of rare sweetness and power. The back is fashioned of two pieces of maple of very handsome flame with sides to match. The varnish is of a lovely amber color. It is not a large instrument and, for that reason, is ideal for a performer with a small hand.
