1FRANCISCUS GOBETTI, VENICE, 1727
3Number 7513. This is one of the outstanding examples of this famous maker's work that exists today. The back of this violin is of one piece of flamed maple of exceptional beauty; the sides are of the same wood and the top is of spruce of medium grain. The instrument is covered with varnish of a lovely dark red color. The scroll is exquisitely done. The tone is very large and of an exceedingly beautiful quality. Many years ago this violin formed part of a celebrated private collection. Until recently it was the solo instrument of the well-known American artist, Kenneth Rose, head of the violin department of Ward-Belmont College, Nashville, Tenn., and concertmaster of the Nashville Symphony. Lyon & Healy highly recommend it to anyone desiring a solo violin of the first rank. (Plate XV)

7JEAN BAPTISTE VUILLAUME, PARIS
9Number 7993. This beautiful instrument is a faithful reproduction of the famous Stradivarius known as Le Messie. When Vuillaume undertook the making of this marvelous replica, he acquired wood almost identical in grain and figure with that used by Stradivarius in the original. At the death of Count Tarisio in 1855, Vuillaume hastened to Italy and acquired Le Messie from the heirs. The priceless Stradivarius remained in Vuillaume's possession until his death, March 19, 1875, after which it was acquired by an enthusiastic amateur of Trinity, Edinburgh. Le Messie is at present in England. As the great Vuillaume would not part with Le Messie during his lifetime, his making of this perfect replica must have been a labor of love. In every detail, it is an exact counterpart of the original, both in wood selection and color of varnish. The tailpiece and pegs are exquisitely carved. We can say without fear of contradiction, that this is the choicest example of Vuillaume's handiwork existing today. This violin is indeed worthy of being known as the famous Parisian luthier's masterpiece. (Plate XVI)
