RARE Old VIOLINS
To one desiring a masterpiece of the Venetian school, we cannot recommend this instrument too highly. It possesses a tone of the utmost purity and power. Some idea of the beauty of the violin may be obtained from the color plate on another page. (Plate XIII)
Price: $6,500
NICOLAS AMATI, CREMONA, 1676
Number 8026. A most beautiful example of Nicolas Amati's craftsmanship. It is of the Grand Pattern. The two-piece back is fashioned of very handsome maple with sides to match; the top is of spruce of medium grain. The instrument is varnished a lovely golden brown. The scroll is finely cut but is not the original, although it is an excellent old English replica of the Amati style. The instrument possesses a tone of ample power for concert work, which is of magnificent quality. This violin is very similar in wood selection to the famous Spagnoletti of the Partello Collection.
Price: $5,500
LAURENTIUS STORIONI, CREMONA, 1774
Number 7239. Of the many fine Storionis that Lyon & Healy has secured, this is the choicest example we have ever offered to the public. It is in magnificent order. The back is of two pieces of handsome maple with sides to match; the top is of spruce of medium grain and the instrument is well covered with a beautiful golden varnish. Joseph Guarnerius del Jesu was evidently this maker's ideal. While one could not say that Storioni had sought to copy the immortal Joseph, yet many of the characteristics of his work are plainly evident in this exceptionally beautiful violin from the hands of Storioni. The great Vieuxtemps played a fine Storioni for a number of years. The tone of this example is exceptionally large and of tremendous carrying power. (Plate XIV)
Price: $5,000
