well cut, and are individual inasmuch as the curves at their upper and lower end are almost triangular in form.
Finally, some of these Stainer violins, which are all slightly shorter than are the Cremonese instruments, have a neck terminating in a very well carved lion's head in place of the scroll.
The wood of which they are made is very handsome, and an oil varnish, reddish yellow in color, is characteristic of all of them. Some of the instruments have a dark brown body and a yellow back.
Labels are but rarely found in the Stainer violins; and when they do appear, they are not printed, but written by hand.
Many Tyrolean violin builders have endeavored to imitate the Cremona masters and Stainer; yet it is easy to recognize their work by examining the spruce used for the backs, which is very close grained, and by noting the ribs, which are narrower and not as well rounded. Their purflings, too, are much narrower and do not everywhere display a well-rounded form.
These Tyrolean violins have F-holes which are excellent imitations of those of the Cremonese and Stainer instruments, but their arches are altogether wrong. The maple used in their construction is of mediocre quality, and the scroll terminating the neck is at least a third smaller. Finally, the varnish used is an alcohol varnish and very weak. Their color, which strives to imitate that of old wood, is in nearly every case a pale yellow.
Among the Tyroleans there are but two makers who have produced good instruments: Egitia Klotz and his son Joseph.
