42VUILLAUME, JEAN-BAPTIST, Paris, b. Mirecourt, 1798, d. Paris, 1875. Son and pupil of Claude Vuillaume V. He was scarcely nineteen years of age when he was called to the workshops of Lébé in Paris. After this he worked two years for Chanot but returned again to Lébé. The association with this highly educated man accomplished wonders in the perfecting of this young artist. In 1825 Lébé took him as partner into his business, but they parted in 1828 and Vuillaume started to work independently. He was very successful in imitating Stradivarius, and at the present day there are many of his violins sold as genuine Stradivarii. He used to haunt antique shops, and, finding an old piece of furniture of rare wood, purchased and used it for making violins. These are the ones which became famous for having a most beautiful tone. He paid great attention to the varnish he used, and is really the only violin maker of the nineteenth century who was able to equal the varnish of the old Italians. The label used by Vuillaume is reproduced on Plate 15, and one of his instruments on Plate 16.

48WAMSLEY (WALMSLEY, WAEMSLEY), PETER, London (Piccadilly), 1715, 1751. Wamsley worked on the Stainer model, but was never able to be compared with his master. He used good wood, his varnish was red-brown, but only a few of his violins can be considered of any great value.
