8KELLEY, JOHN CRAIG
9First Lessons on the Violin
10Size, 9 1/4 x 12 1/4; viii + 62 pp.; 14 illustrations; paper; $1.25
11This book aims to meet the deficiency in the supply of exercises that are easy enough for beginners. The method is followed of introducing only one finger at a time, and the ultimate aim is to establish flexibility of bow-arm and of left hand. Twenty-four melodies, mostly familiar folksongs, have been introduced at frequent intervals with the idea of making the book more attractive to the pupil. Each melody has two simple accompaniments, one for teacher and one for piano. Either or both may be used.

18This is a condensation of a larger work, and goes straight to the point, advancing a pupil rapidly but with certainty. It is an admirable preparation for the famous Studies of Kreutzer. English and German text.

27That the violin may be successfully taught to classes of beginners in schools has been abundantly proved abroad. Dr. Mitchell is proving it in the public schools of Boston where this book is used. By the aid of pictures, diagrams, text and easily memorized exercises, the author presents his subject with great clarity, in a manner stimulating and unconventional. The book is a pioneer in our country in the field of class-room instruction on the violin.
