FOREWORD
"Though I am not able to inform men more than I know, that I may be able to give them occasion to consider."

The above lines embody the sentiment that inspired the author to prepare this directory in which every effort has been utilized to assemble many established facts concerning the progress of those whose names are appearing in this publication. It is the first opportunity fostered in our community to show the progress our people are making spiritually, educationally, professionally, and commercially. We have made outstanding accomplishments and unless such facts are compiled into one publication, they will go on many years still unheralded.
It is hoped that this book will help the reader to become more familiar with the progress our people are making in Evanston and nearby communities along many lines of endeavor, notwithstanding the disadvantages and lack of opportunities that dominate our communities. Their present successes are examples of their abilities to use barriers as stepping stones to greater achievements.
I trust that the enclosed information will inspire others to work toward greater goals; that their achievements will be honorable and permanent; and that the progress will revolutionize our community's economical and social conditions. Such accomplishments can be obtained only through understanding, Co-operation, interest and organization, thereby enabling us to become more independent and progressive.
The successful publication of this directory is due, in part, to the co-operation and advertising given us by our white friends.
