COMPOSER TITLE, KEY & OP. GR. REMARKS
Brahms, Johannes (Cont.) Sonata No. 1 in G Major, Op. 78 (Cont.) C 2 in the tempo primo. The movement ends in the mood of a poetic farewell.
Allegro molto moderato ๐…˜๐…ฅ = 88. The opening is tender and affectionate, almost imploring. The movement throughout has the character of great sensitiveness. In the E-flat major section, after the double bar, the second movement is called back to our mind, only to give way to a passage of exuberant joy. A sublime coda brings the sonata to a satisfying close.
Sonata No. 2 in A Major, Op. 100 C [address hidden] amabile ๐…˜๐…ฅ = 112. The opening conveys a feeling of well-being and friendliness. This feeling soon changes to a decisive rhythm and joy. A lyric section of great tenderness follows only to give way to ideas of virility and strength. Thoughts of an intimate character lead back to a repetition of the first parts of the movement. A section of 24 bars starts in a serious and philosophical mood and changes to mystery and transfiguration. The vivace indicates passion and joy, but soon the idea of the first theme returns in a dreamy and reposed mood. A jubilant coda brings the movement to a joyful end.
Andante tranquillo ๐…˜๐…ฅ = 60, a movement of pastoral serenity and friendliness. The vivace ๐…˜๐…ฅ = 168 suggests lightfooted gracefulness.
Allegretto grazioso ๐…˜๐…ฅ = 66. The opening is warm and eloquent. The first pp. brings a mood of ghostly mystery but is contrasted (Cont.)
