1becomes further modified to "early in the seventeenth century," until it somewhere reappears in figures as "about 1615," without there having been the slightest apparent ground for such a change, other than, perhaps, a desire on the part of the writer to appear original in dealing with a subject which does not permit of originality. Finally, another author, not unnaturally supposing that if a violin maker worked at his business "about 1615," the probability would be that he was a grown man, boldly hazards "from 1600 to 1630." In such cases I have, as far as I have been able to do so, restored the date indications to their original power. There are also some names which are strikingly similar to each other, such as "P. Aletsie, Monaco," and "P. Alletsee, Munich," and which are also contemporaneous. With these I have not taken any liberties, nor, indeed, have I with any names, except where manifestly misspelled through unacquaintance with the language to which they are native, such as "Cheruti" for "Ceruti." I have retained one or two early lute makers, because of their assumed connection with the period of viol makers.
