1easily be discerned that coal will prove an important factor in the prosperity of Saginaw, and will undoubtedly do more in the direction of securing industries than any other factor. In addition to mines now in operation, there are five others in course of construction, which will be mining coal within a few months. At the present time the mines above alluded to pay out $55,000 per month for wages. It is estimated that the expenses of the coal mines within the above mentioned radius, for labor, supplies, etc., amount to over $1,000,000 annually.
3It is said that coal made Pittsburg, and no doubt the same will some day be said of Saginaw, as low-priced fuel is one of the first requirements of manufacturers seeking a location.
5The agricultural district contiguous to Saginaw is one of the richest in the United States. In fact, the whole Saginaw Valley abounds with as rich soil as can be found anywhere in the State, and is especially adapted to raising sugar beets, as it lies directly in the sugar isothermal belt designated by the United States Bureau of Agriculture. This fact is verified by the success attained in the manufacture of sugar by numerous factories all located in the valley. The fact that over 3,000,000 pounds of cheese are being manufactured annually in this immediate vicinity will convey to the reader a slight idea of the agricultural resources of Saginaw.
7Saginaw is at present the third city in the State, but with its present outlook, it will make a race for a better position among Michigan cities, in the near future.
