INTRODUCTION
The 1922 Edition of R. L. Polk & Co.'s Saginaw City Directory is herewith presented to its patrons.
It represents the annual enumeration of the citizens of the municipality and immediate environs, their occupations and pursuits, their commercial, industrial and social interests. It is a volume of a series published by R. L. Polk & Co. for many years, the present volume being the 37th. During all these years the Directory has kept pace with the progress of the times. It has had the benefit of all improvements in directory-making. It has served this community faithfully and it is one of the factors contributing to the growth, prosperity and success of the city. There is no other publication that records the names and activities of the citizens. Year by year the Directory records Saginaw as the city really is. It is the standard work of reference today and later becomes a permanent history of the people and their institutions. No other work so clearly portrays the condition of the community. In modern business and social life the interests of citizens are mutually so interwoven that to readily know where to find each other is a matter of the greatest importance. No other question is so frequently asked by millions of people as the one "Where does he or she live?" To answer this question is the object of the City Directory. It is an absolute essential in conducting business and social affairs.
The statistical review which follows this Introduction is noteworthy and clearly visualizes the importance of Saginaw in commerce, finance and industry.
The five essential features of the work are set forth in the order following:
THE MISCELLANEOUS DEPARTMENT is contained in pages 35 to 48; it comprises data concerning city and county officials, Federal officers, banks, building associations, cemeteries, churches, clubs, courts, hospitals, homes, libraries, schools, convents, newspapers, parks, public buildings, halls, postoffice data, etc. This department covers every phase of civic and social activity.
THE BUYERS' GUIDE is embraced in pages 49 to 104 inclusive. It gives the progressive business men represented therein an opportunity to describe their lines more fully than is possible in the necessarily condensed descriptions in the body of the Directory. It shows not only the more progressive and alert business men, but in compact form it becomes a "Who's Who" in the business life of Saginaw.
THE STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE AND DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS is included in pages 105 to 245. This Department embraces a list of all the Streets and Avenues in the city alphabetically arranged; the houses and buildings being arranged in numerical order, with the name of the occupants or householders placed opposite each number.
THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of citizens and business concerns is embraced in pages 247 to 801.
THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is contained in pages 803 to 887; this department exhibits the various manufacturing, mercantile and professional occupations compiled in alphabetical order by headings and this feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable epitome of the business interests of the community. "The Directory is the common intermediary between Buyer and Seller."
