    1. BERGONZI, ZOSIMO, Cremona, 1750 to 1777.
    2. BERNARDEL, AUGUSTE-SEBASTIEN-PHILIPPE, Paris, b. Mirecourt, 1802, d. Bougival, 1870. Bernardel came to Paris in 1820 and learned the trade with Nicolo Lupot. He founded his own business in 1826, and worked alone until 1859, when he took his two sons as partners into the business. He was one of the most skillful French violin makers of the nineteenth century, and was also considered one of the greatest connoisseurs of wood. In 1851 he exhibited some of his work at an exposition in London and received a prize. The label used by Bernardel is reproduced on Plate 15.
