Ein ausgezeichneter Physiker, der sich viel mit den Gesetzen der Akustik beschäftigte und wertvolle Untersuchungen der Geige vornahm, wozu ihm Vuillaume die kostbarsten italienischen Geigen zur Verfügung stellte. Eine Frucht seiner Studien ist: »Mémoire sur la construction des instruments à cordes et à archet« (1819). Schließlich erfand er auch eine Geige in der Form eines Trapezoids, die er 1819 der Akademie der Wissenschaften in Paris vorlegte, und veranlaßte auch den Bau mehrerer Geigen von trapezförmiger oder zylindrischer und von vierkantiger Gestalt. Beispiele dafür finden sich sowohl aus der Sammlung Snoeck in Berlin als auch im Museum des Pariser Konservatoriums. Wenn diese Versuche auch wenig Erfolg haben konnten, so hat S. sich doch durch seine wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten um den Geigenbau verdient gemacht.

    5. Er entstammte einem polnischen Adelsgeschlecht und war ursprünglich für den geistlichen Beruf bestimmt. Als er das Gymnasium besuchte, wohnte er bei einem Geigenmacher, und ohne Vorwissen seines Vaters, der Schulvorstand war, erlernte er den Geigenbau. Er scheint dann lange gewandert zu haben. Als er nach Wien kam, mußte er, da er nicht in Wien gelernt hatte, erst um die Bewilligung zur Niederlassung ansuchen. Im Jahre 1824 erscheint er dann als »befugter Geigenmacher« eingetragen. Er war einer der allerbesten Wiener Geigenmacher und arbeitete nach einem großen, breiten Stradivari-Modell und verwendete das schönste Holz. Ränder und Schnecke hielt er ziemlich kräftig, sein Lack ist bräunlich bis rotgelb. Er hat auch einige Kopien nach Guarneri del Gesù gebaut und unter anderen eine so getreue Kopie von Paganinis Geige angefertigt, daß der große Geiger selbst ganz entzückt war und Savicki in einem Zeugnis vom 10. August 1828 für ein »außerordentliches Genie« erklärte »sowohl in der Verfertigung neuer Violinen als in der unübertrefflichen Art, alle Streichinstrumente zu reparieren«. Der Ton seiner Geigen ist voll und sehr kräftig. Eine reich mit Perlmutter eingelegte Violine mit dem Zettel: Smæ. C. R. Apostolicæ Maiestati / Ferdinando Imo Austriae imperatori / dedicavit in signum Venerationis et submissionis / Carol. Nicol. Sawicki Leopolitanus
