51MONTAGNANA, DOMENICO, Venice, b. about 1690, d. about 1750. Although a master of first rank, there is little known about his life. Judging by his work he must have been a pupil of Nicolas Amati, others think he was a disciple of Stradivarius, as his violins undoubtedly show the influence of the latter master. He always preferred a large model, selecting the wood carefully. The workmanship is faultless, and the varnish of golden red color. His violins bring prices comparable with those obtained for the Cremonese masters. The label used by Montagnana is reproduced on Plate 8, and one of his instruments on Plate 9.
