good wood and a red varnish. Only a few genuine violins of his make are in existence.
GAGLIANO, FERDINANDO, Naples, b. Naples, 1724, d. 1781. Eldest son of Nicolo, with whom he cannot compare, although he was a good workman, his instruments resembling those of Alessandro. He imitated the last model of Stradivarius and used a reddish brown or yellow varnish of a warm color. In the selection of his woods he was particularly careful.
GAGLIANO, GENNARO, Naples, b. about 1700, d. after 1770. Second son and pupil of his father Alessandro, whose influence in his work cannot be mistaken. He imitated the Stradivarius models and his best work was done between 1730 and 1750. His violins are noted for their fine wood, orange or red varnish and beautiful tone. One of his violins, made in 1758, was sold to Charles Mahillon for 10,000 francs. Gennaro is considered the peer of his brother Nicola.
GAGLIANO, GIOVANNI I, Naples, b. about 1740, d. 1806.
GAGLIANO, GIOVANNI II, Naples, b. 1800, d. after 1867. A son of Giovanni I, and classed as one of the better violin makers of his time, although no one of his instruments is deserving of special mention.
GAGLIANO, GIUSEPPE, Naples, 1725, d. 1793. Second son of Nicolo Gagliano and brother of Ferdinando, Antonio and Giovanni. He worked scrupulously after his father's model, and was able to give his instruments a beautifully clear tone. In later years, he worked with his brother Antonio.
GAGLIANO, NICOLA I, Naples, b. about 1665 or 1670, d. about 1740. Eldest son of Alessandro, but dissimilar in talent. He usually imitated the Stradivarius models, mostly the older periods of the master, using a bright yellow varnish. One of his instruments of the year 1750 was owned by Prof. Jacob Grün of Vienna. Many of Nicola's violins are decorated with purfling of a highly ornamental nature.
GAGLIANO, RAFFAELE, Naples, b. about 1790, d. 1857. A son of Giovanni who worked most of the time in partnership with his brother Antonio. The color of his violins was brown, and the workmanship of an ordinary character.

After Lupot's death in 1824, Charles took over his business and his workshops. He was unquestionably the most able French violin maker of his time. His instruments compare favorably with those of the old Italian makers, and bring high prices. There are several splendid specimens in the museum of the Paris Conservatory. The label used by Gand is reproduced on Plate 15.
