1C [address hidden] ben moderato. = about 60. The opening conveys a mood of mystery and loftiness. The molto crescendo leads to a section of great breadth and exaltation, but gives way to noble and affectionate singing in the piano part. The opening idea returns and the pattern is repeated in a more intensified character. It is a movement of miraculous color and spiritual exaltation.
3Allegro = 132. The opening is turbulent and passionate. The meno F is wooing and affectionate but soon gives way again to the appassionata character. A section of noble singing and caressing tenderness, of dreamy poetry and fiery passion follows. The movement ends on a note of triumph.
5Recitativo-Fantasia (ben moderato) = 48, a movement of great flexibility in the tempo. The opening in the piano part suggests heartbreaking poignancy. The short rubato violin cadenza calls for authority and imagination. A dreamy dialogue follows and the plaintive recitativo phrase in the violin leads back to the opening idea. The molto tranquillo, an imaginative and mysterious section, is contrasted by the poco animato, which suggests great strength and authority. The section after the double bar starts in a dreamy mood but builds up to great dramatic fervor. Then follow moments of sublime exaltation and more dramatic outcries. The movement ends in a serious, reflective mood.
