25KLOTZ, AEGIDIUS I, Mittenwald, 1675 to 1711. There are in existence a large number of old violins under the name of Aegidius Klotz. His work is similar to the work of Aegidius II of the eighteenth century, but his violins are much better and worth about three times as much as those of his namesake. He must have been a pupil of Stainer. One of his violins may be found in a collection at Berlin.

31KLOTZ, MATHIAS I, Mittenwald, b. 1656, d. 1743. The real founder of the violin industry in Mittenwald. He was the eldest son of Urban Klotz and received his first lessons from Stainer, although his real education was accomplished in Italy where he worked for six years under Giovanni Railich in Padua. His work is of the highest grade and very praiseworthy. The tone is wonderful although he did not always use the best wood. There are a good many violins of his make in existence. In 1890 a bronze statue was erected to his memory in Mittenwald. A reproduction of the label used by Klotz will be found on Plate 17.
32KLOTZ, SEBASTIAN I, Mittenwald, b. 1696, d. after 1767. A son of Mathias Klotz. Violins of his make with a later date than 1750 are not in existence. His instruments are built after the Stainer model. The varnish is thicker and better than that of his father and of different colors, mostly red or dark brown, resembling that of Albanus. His violins bring a high price in both Great Britain and the United States. The label used by Klotz is reproduced on Plate 17, and one of his instruments on Plate 19.

42LANDI, Pietro, Siena, 1774.
43LANDOLFI, CARLO FERDINANDO, Milan, 1734 to 1787. Most of Landolfi's violins were made on the model of Joseph Guarnerius, therefore, it is probable that he was a pupil of this great master. Many are made with the greatest care, while others were crudely executed of poor material, even in respect to the varnish which is sometimes very carelessly applied. The String Quartet of Brussels has one of his instruments dated 1742. The label used
