CAMILLI, CAMILLO, Mantua, 1714 to 1760.
It is generally claimed that Camilli was a pupil of Stradivarius, but his violins resemble more those of Peter Guanerius, so it is more than probable that he was a pupil of the latter. His instruments have a fine tone, excellent wood and light red or brownish red varnish of the first quality. One of his violins, marked 1734, is in the possession of a member of the Brussels String Quartet.
CAPO, ——, Milan, 1717 to 1718.
CAPP, GOFFREDO, Saluzzo, b. Saluzzo, 1644, d. 1717. Son of Andrea Cappa. He was probably a pupil of Nicolo Amati, and is classed as one of the best of the Amati School. His violins have a noble tone and can easily be compared with those of G. B. Rogeri.
CAPP, GIOACCHINO AND GIUSEPPE, Saluzzio, Turin, 1661 to 1725.
CARCANIUS, ——, Cremona, 1500.
CARCASSI, LORENZO, Florence, 1737 to 1757. He was a partner in the firm of Lorenzo and Tomasso Carcassi, although he worked independently. His violins have a high arch and a yellow varnish. Later the Brothers Carcassi manufactured only guitars. One of his violins is in the museum at Cologne.
CARCASSI, TOMASSO, Florence, 1747 to 1786. Probably a partner in the firm of Lorenzo and Tomasso Carcassi. His work is of the same high quality as his brother Lorenzo's.

CERIN, MARCO ANTONIO, Venice, 1780 to 1824.
CERUTTI, ENRICO, Cremona, b. 1808, d. 1883.
CERUTTI, GIOV. BATTISTA, Cremona, b. about 1755, d. after 1817. A pupil of Lorenzo Storiomi, and later his successor. On account of ill health the business was afterwards transferred to his son. He worked on the Guanerius model, and made in all about five hundred violins. The varnish varies in color, sometimes light yellow, then again deep red. At times he used different woods for back and belly. The tone of his violin is loud and clear, and has quite naturally gained by age.
CERUTTI, GIUSEPPE, Cremona, b. about 1787, d. Mantua, 1860.
CHALLONER, THOMAS, London, 18th century.
CHAMPION DE ST. JULIEN, RENE, Paris, 1730 to 1770.
CHANOT, FRANCIS, Paris, b. Mirecourt, 1787 or 1788, d. Brest (Rochefort), 1823. Francois Chanot was not a professional but rather an amateur violin maker. He started a shop with the organ builder, Lebe, and tried to build an original model in which he only partially succeeded. The tone of his violins is too muffled and the varnish lacks luster.
CHANOT, FREDERIC W., London, 1890 to 1900.
CHANOT, GEORGES, Mirecourt, 1710 to 1714.
CHANOT, GEORGES, Paris, b. Mirecourt, 1801, d. Courcelles, 1883. The son and pupil of Joseph Chanot, he came to Paris in 1819 and worked in the shops of Lebe where he constructed violins for his brother. After
